You're not serious until Taylor Swift fires you! Todd talked about playing the guitars on Kacey Musgraves records, songwriting with Lera Lynn, keeping the magic in the music during tracking sessions, and how to find new chord shapes for your guitar.

Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com

My guest today is Todd Lombardo, an ACM acoustic session guitar player-of-the-year nominee, producer and songwriter living in Nashville TN. Most notably known for his contributions to Kacey Musgraves “Golden Hour”. He is also responsible for Canadian platinum productions as well as numerous number one country hits as a session player.

I first met Todd when he brought the artist Mickey Cash over to The Toy Box Studio for me to mix. I was struck by his great production ideas, arrangement decisions, and guitar playing. Years later we reconnected over at Craig Alvins East Nashville studio which he occupies now. It also turned out we were both interested in weird stuff beyond music like Wim Hof and cold exposure Ice Baths for good health and ultimately we became neighbors.

More recently I got to hear a new record he recorded with his partner in life and music Lera Lynn that sounds amazing. So I'm psyched to learn more about what Todd is doing in the studio and get some great recording, production, and mixing tricks for you Rockstars.

My fingers are in tons of pies! Hugh talked about songwriting from dusty notes, Monty Python animations, shooting music videos, piezo mics for guitars, creating sounds from voice memos, pushing through writer's block, and podcast editing for money.

Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com

My guest today is Hugh Macdonald aka Fairhazel a British/South African singer songwriter, artist, and producer born in Brighton but raised in London, Cape Town and Paris. Hugh left Berklee College of Music in Boston in 2018 returning to London to work with Communion Music under the name Fairhazel, releasing his first single 7x7 in February 2018 to critical acclaim. Roisin O’Connor of The Independent described it as having "tender, whispering vocals that recall the likes of Villagers, Ben Howard and Sufjan Stevens”. Inspired by artists France Gall, Harry Nilsson and Andy Shauf among others, Fairhazel has established himself as a musical storyteller blurring the lines between fiction and true stories.

At his Los Angeles studio, he works on creating all aspects of his music himself from songwriting to arrangement, production, and engineering. He also frequently produces and mixes music, primarily rock, folk, jazz, pop and soul. Although Fairhazel is a solo venture, a band often accompanies him at shows and he has opened for Agnes Obel, Banfi and Astræa. Recently he played Whispering Bob Harris's Under the Apple Tree, and featured thrice on the lineup of the Counting Crows Underwater Sunshine Festival. As well as the Fairhazel project, Hugh runs a monthly live music event with his wife, Danielle, soon to be growing into a day long monthly festival. Hugh and Danielle also direct, shoot and edit music videos for independent artists.

I met Hugh back in 2019 when he came through Nashville at 21 years old and we did a live stream for our Youtube channel where Hugh wrote a song on the spot using lyrics from you Rockstars in the comments and everything was recorded on the Roswell Pro Audio Delphos and Colares mics. And Hugh has since worked with me a couple of years as the head videographer for our NAMM videos in Anaheim CA.

Nothing is bigger than you! Joakeem (our youngest guest yet) talked about producing Hip-Hop-J-Dilla-Haitian-Komba music, midi studio signal flow, AI studio assistants, why you need Twitch & Discord, and a thorough breakdown of iZotope plugins & apps.

Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com

My guest today is Joakeem Gaston a Boston-born musician, producer and photographer growing up in Dorchester, Massachusetts, and a graduate of the Full Sail recording program. As a first-generation American of Haitian immigrants, Joakeem was exposed to a variety of artists, music and people. Hearing different languages and different genres were hand in hand with his upbringing. Through his networking skills he learned in High School he was able to land at iZotope where he worked on the Customer Care and Artist Relations team.

I met Joakeem through his time working with iZotope and we got to connect at AES 2022 when I heard some of the cool vocal featured groove-based music he was creating. Joakeem is both musically and technically proficient in creating music on the computer so I thought it would be a great opportunity to learn more about some of the cool things that he learned at iZotope and talk about how he is making his tracks. I use iZotope all the time (and a ton for this podcast) but I also know there are many other musical uses we could learn about.

My guest today is Nick Bullock a Nashville based producer, engineer, musician, and artist.

One of the many things I was taught as a young man was to follow my curiosity. That curiosity led me to music school, to my band of ten years (and over fifteen hundred shows worldwide), and to my love of recording today. It leads me to ask questions even when I felt stupid asking them. Each and every one of those questions, and the discoveries that came afterwards have led to a wonderful life and relationship with music, and the artists I work with. Following that curiosity is one of the main reasons I'm still in love with music and recording.

Every day I do my best to live by some pretty simple principles; be honest, be present, try to learn something new, help others dig deep to be the best version of themselves they can be, and when in doubt, always reference a Beatles or Stones song (not kidding).

So here I am, living in Nashville, TN, married to the love of my life, Meredith (also an amazing visual artist) with three incredible (and curious) boys. I get to make music every day in one of the greatest studios in the world. Each day is a gift. I'm eternally grateful that I get to create music with some of the best people in the world.

Would you say no to a session with Bono and Edge? Dan talked about working at Memphis Sound Productions, recording B.B. King & Paul Schaffer, writing manuals for API, mixing with SSL, and teaching at one of the top recording colleges in Nashville TN.

Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com

My guest today is Dan Pfeifer a professor in the Department of Recording Industry and Graduate Faculty Member at Middle Tennessee State University, and a native of Louisville, Kentucky. He got his Bachelor of Music degree from Middle Tennessee State University in 1983 and Master of Arts degree from the University of Memphis in 1987 with an emphasis in audio engineering and music production.

Before to coming to MTSU, Dan worked professionally as an audio engineer and producer, working with artists that include B.B. King, ZZ Top, Albert Collins, Al Green, Jerry Lee Lewis, and many others. He has also served as 2nd Vice President and member of the Board of Governors for the Memphis Chapter of the NARAS, and he is a voting member of the Recording Academy and a professional member of the Audio Engineering Society.

Dan has received many awards including the MTSU Alumni Association True Blue Citation of Distinction for MTSU Faculty, the MTSU Distinguished Achievement in Creative Activity Award, the Tennessee Board of Regents Academic Excellence and Quality Award, the MTSU Outstanding Teacher Award, and the Recording Industry Outstanding Alumni Award for University Service, and was inducted into the MTSU Band of Blue Hall of Fame.

But most significantly for this interview, Dan was my audio teacher 30 years ago when I was at MTSU as an undergraduate student learning the basics of audio and recording. Dan taught me with a black board and three recording studios everything audio including the difference between various types of microphones, audio signal flow, the science of sound and hearing, flow charts for mixing consoles, and how to align an analog tape machine. Basically, Dan was the first teacher in my life to teach me stuff that would carry forward to change my life and career and inspire me to make records for 30 years. And the only part I regret is making those stupid bubble charts to represent audio mixes. You know the ones with a big bubble for the kick drum and a little bubble for the hi hat. "Writing (or drawing) about music is like dancing about architecture."

This episode is dedicated to Ben Morton my classmate from MTSU. Ben may your bass have six strings on it in heaven and may you never have to change them again.

Is it bad to print your mix offline? John talked about the importance of arrangement, mastering dynamics in your mix, the Fletcher Munson curve, listening loud and quiet, crest factor, customer care, and why some plugins are different every time!

Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com

My guest today is John Mayfield a mastering engineer with over 50 years of experience and owner of Mayfield Mastering in Berry Hill. Originally a career musician, John turned to recording and mixing in the 80s travelling to studios all over the world. He has also been a guest on episode RSR036.

Originally a successful touring and studio musician John started out in the studio recording and then mixing all over the world finally settling on Nashville to start his own mastering studio. Dave Matthews Band, Sara Evans, Kathy Mattea, Naturally 7, Warner Brothers Records and Universal Music Group-UK, to list a few.

John notes on his website that everyone in music is trying to figure out what is next and define the new business model. Since records are being made more often by independent sources with smaller budgets that cannot always afford the high dollar mixer the need for quality mastering is very much in demand. “Music will always be a part of our lives. Maintaining and improving the quality of that music has always been at the heart of my efforts. It is not a job to me, but rather a true joy, You would be amazed at what we can do with a project in mastering that might not have been an A+ mix.”

My guest today is Bill Szymczyk (and his son Mike Szymczyk) a Grammy-winning and multi-nominated American music producer and engineer best known for producing Hotel California by The Eagles. He produced many top albums and singles of the 1970s, though–aside from continuing to work with Joe Walsh–he retired from the music business by 1990  re-emerging in the late 2000s for select projects including the 2007 Eagles album Long Road Out of Eden and the 2008 eponymous debut of Brian Vander Ark.

Unlike many music producers, Szymczyk has no background as a musician. He was originally a sonar operator for the U.S. Navy and took some audio production classes as part of his Navy training. Besides his work with the Eagles, he has produced hit songs and albums for such diverse artists as B.B. King, Joe Walsh, The James Gang, and Elvin Bishop.

My guest today is Billy Decker aka The Deckerator is an award winning Nashville mixing engineer known for his efficient and effective mixing method.

He’s mixed 16 Billboard #1”s to date such as Dustin Lynch’s “Riding Roads” and notable artists as Sam Hunt, Chris Young, Rodney Atkins, Parmalee, Colt Ford, and the metal band Starset to name just a few. He also mixed George Jones’s last album before he passed. Billy Decker made history in July of 2014 when Sam Hunt became the most added new artist of all time.

Decker works in a unique way. “I mix really fast. Most of my mixes are finished within an hour. To be able to do this, I use a lot of templates in pro tools. Instead of spending two hours EQing a kick drum I can do it in thirty seconds, because I have set up templates for the album that outline all the basic parameters for each instrument. I can then work on fine tuning - working on the entire mix, rather than focusing on individual adjustments. It’s a good way to work. It’s fast efficient and most importantly it’s fun."

He has been on the show recently for episode RSR281 and is also now a published author for his book “Template Mixing and Mastering: The Ultimate Guide to Achieving a Professional Sound” and has created a series of mixing plugins called the Bus Glue Billy Decker Bundle over at Joey Sturgis Tones.
