My guest today is Charlie Waymire, a music producer, recording engineer, and mixing engineer based in Los Angeles with a career that began behind the drum kit. As a drummer and musician, Charlie developed a passion for capturing the essence of sound, gradually transitioning into the world of audio production. His journey led him to establish Ultimate Studios, Inc., a place where he records, produces, and mixes music for artists across different genres.
Charlie's hands-on experience as a musician guides him as a producer and engineer, understanding the creative process from an artist’s perspective. This allows him to capture authentic performances and help guide artists in crafting their best work. As a career drummer, Charlie wanted Ultimate Studios, Inc. to have a great sounding and affordable drum room where he has had the pleasure of working with some of the best drummers in the world, including Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Ray Luzier (Korn), Oscar Seaton (Lionel Ritchie) and Steven Wolf (Dr Luke/Alicia Keys) to name a few.
With a focus on sonic quality and artistic collaboration, Charlie has built his reputation as a trusted partner for artists seeking professional recording and production services. His dedication to both the technical and creative sides of music production has made him sought-after in the Los Angeles music scene, committed to helping artists achieve their full potential.
But, he says, the real star of his studio is his dog, Delilah. She actually runs the show, and Charlie mainly makes coffee. :)
Special thanks to Matt McGlynn at Roswell Pro Audio for making our introduction.

My guest today is Jason Livermore who got his first snare drum at just three years old and eventually picked up guitar and bass but found his way back to drums, which he loved most. In junior high, he discovered punk rock, with Milo Goes to College as his first vinyl purchase. Jason played in bands throughout high school and college, even recording some of them himself. After college, he realized that recording would be a better path than selling beer for Miller. When ALL opened the Blasting Room in Fort Collins in 1994, Jason jumped at the opportunity and has been a key part of the studio ever since. In 2015, he became co-owner alongside Bill Stevenson, working on about 95% of the albums from the studio, including producing the Latin GRAMMY-winning record Solo D’Lira in 2023. Jason has also played drums for bands like Wretch Like Me, Drag the River, Bill The Welder, Soul City Missionaries, and The Virginia Sisters.

My guest today is Dave Derr, a musician raised in a family of engineers destined to rock and make his mark on the recording industry. Dave started with studying classical piano, composition, and theory as a Music Major in college but still loved ripping solos on his '67 Gibson SG Special. This passion for music led him to a 12-year journey with the band Jack of Diamonds, touring the Philadelphia, Delaware, and Maryland areas.
But Dave wasn’t just rocking the stage—he was also the guy fixing the band's guitars, keyboard rigs, and PA systems. This hands-on experience sparked his path to becoming an Electronics Technician and eventually a studio engineer.
Dave landed a gig at Eventide and worked alongside industry giants, contributing to the design of iconic gear like the H3000, H3500, and DSP4000. And after hours? He ran his own recording studio at home, refining his craft night and day.
In 1994, Dave’s talents culminated in the creation of the Distressor—a modern classic that’s now a staple in major studios worldwide. Empirical Labs now has over 42,000 Distressors sold and an entire line of analog processors and digital plugins and their latest creation, the PUMP, a powerful 500 Series compressor based on the Distressor is breaking new ground for getting killer sounds in the studio or out in the field.
I am super excited to have Dave Derr joining us on the podcast today. This is a big day for me, the show, and definitely a bucket list interview!

My guest today is Case Newcomb, a recording and mix engineer/producer and winner of the Music Expo Mix Critique for his live remixing who is currently working out of the historic Hyde Street Studios in San Francisco. After seizing the opportunity to go back to school and switch careers, Case's audio career has been consistently on the rise. In the studio he turned Intern to staff engineer at Hyde Street Studios in just 6 months.
Case rose up the ranks in live sound astonishingly quickly as well. From mixing in small clubs to mixing at 1000+ capacity venues within his first year of doing monitors and FOH. He has recently put live sound on hold to focus on a full time studio career. We met at NAMM at our Recording Studio Rockstars, Working Class Audio, Mixdown Online, Audio-Issues meetup which was a blast!
Case has a great energy and is making some awesome records including artists like Nvrman, Möndo Freaks, Diablo Muerto, and Manos Lindas.
Thank you to Matt Boudreau for the introduction!

My guest today is Charles Root III, a recording, mixing, reluctant mastering engineer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist. He has performed on releases by Goo Goo Dolls, Monkey Wrench, Stationwagon, Doombuggy, and Acme Anvil Corp. He is also Terran based biped who has improperly assumed human form, as evidenced by his poor eyesight. Due to this poor vision, he smells and hears things that others don't, which can be a blessing or a curse in the confines of a recording studio.
Chaz missed most of his sophomore and junior years of high school due to blindness and eye surgeries. He spent most of that period in his room with a walnut Explorer guitar, Marshall Plexi half stack, and a pile of old Electro-Harmonix pedals making sounds custom tailored to annoy his parents.
Chaz currently resides in South Wales, NY, USA with his wife and studio partner Julie "JJ" Guyse where they operate Electric Owl Works, LLC which includes a residential recording studio, Rachael's Owl Music (a BMI affiliated music publishing company), and the Electric Owl Works Records indie label. They are proud to have artists of many genres from around the world.

My guest today is Jeremy Stephens, a music producer, mixer based in north Alabama, about an hour and a half south of Nashville. Jeremy has had the honor of collaborating with some of the greatest musicians on earth, from the Alabama Shakes to Jason Isbell, Gregg Allman to Chuck Leavell. “I learned the art of producing and recording from legendary rock producer Johnny Sandlin. He served as Johnny's right-hand man for many years, learning everything there is to know about making a goddamn good record.”
In 2001, Jeremy started Clearwave Recording Studio as a cost effective place to craft records on his own terms. It quickly became a sonic sanctuary for indie rock, americana, and a fresh alternative to the cookie cutter Nashville thing. “This is a place where creative souls thrive, where the ideas come to life, and where being different ain't just okay – it's downright expected.”
The goal here is to make hit records and win Grammys, and to do it the right way. Jeremy remains convinced that with the right approach, anything is possible. That's why he focuses on capturing the very best performances of great songs, and gives his musicians the freedom to explore and create.

My guest today is Tex Cokley, a music producer and mixer in SW Washington state. He has been producing and mixing rock songs and albums for bands for the last 15 years. As a musician, he is versed in different instruments and works with many studio musicians.
I met Tex and his friend Alex at NAMM a couple of years ago when they came to our first Recording Studio Rockstars meetup. I always love connecting with fans of the podcast aka the Rockstars and Tex is definitely one of them. He has a great rock band called Opticus and balances recording with a busy career as an electrician. His enthusiasm and dedication to making records and attending NAMM each year and the fact that Recording Studio Rockstars is able to help fans like Tex make great records inspires me to make this show and keep bringing you interviews every week. Tex’s credits include powerful rock bands like Forever Dethroned, Rust and Chrome, and Opticus which you can hear in the playlist.

My guest today is Jeremy Steckel, a musician and producer in Columbus OH. Having settled into an indie-pop and rock production and mixing universe, Jeremy focuses on building the landscape of the song around the core part of almost every modern song: the vocal performance. Nothing speaks louder than an emotional, well-captured vocal delivery and the song always has to serve that objective.
Jeremy’s credits include MEOWBOYS, Coastal Club, Lui, Darity, Sean Mac, Trauna, Brightest London, The Orphan The Poet and Embleton to name a few. Today we will talk about working as a touring guitarist, building a new mixing studio, how to get a great production and mix, and even finding ways to level up your business through the power of a mastermind group.

My guest today is Matt Robertson, a British-born, Canadian-based, 3x Grammy-nominated composer, producer, and musical director. Matt has worked with Björk, Anohni, Arca, The Cinematic Orchestra, and Ellie Goulding as musical director and orchestrator / arranger.
He has released four albums under his own name to date, balancing ambient sound design alongside warm organic techno and ripples of delicate electronics. His albums ‘Forecast’, ‘In Echelon’ and ‘Entology’, have been described as “symphonic electronica and leftfield techno that’s cinematic in scale” (Mixmag), “magnificent…wild, electronic sound” (The Line Of Best Fit) and “Nils Frahm’s modern classical meets Jon Hopkins’ grainy techno” (MOJO).
Growing up listening to a healthy mixture of Jean-Michel Jarre and Jimmy Smith, Matt graduated from the University of Surrey before working at recording studios in London learning how to fix, and later build, some of his own synths. Working with a collection of vintage, modern and DIY synths, and combining electronic music production with classical composition and cinematic soundscapes; artists, producers, and film composers alike seek his enveloping and distinct sound. His work with Anoushka Shankar awarded him 2 Grammy nominations, and he recently scored the films ‘The New Corporation – The Unfortunately Necessary Sequel’, and' ‘Navalny’.
