Ross talked about finding perfect mic placement, creating wider guitars & powerful drums, the importance of spiritual growth in creativity, and much much more...

My guest today is Ross Hogarth a Multiple Grammy winning producer, engineer, and mixer with a long and varied list of credits in musical styles from blues, to reggae, to heavy metal, and rock. Gov’t Mule, Roger Waters, The Black Crowes, Shawn Colvin, John Mellencamp, R.E.M.and Jewel are just some of the artists that Ross has worked with in over three decades of recording.

Growing up in NY during the influential punk scene of the 70’s, and making his way to San Francisco’s exploding New Wave scene and Southern California’s seminal rock scene. Ross evolved from doing live production and sound on the road with Jackson Browne, David Lindley, Fleetwood Mac and Little Feat into producing, engineering, and mixing Grammy winning srtists in the studio. And In 1986 Ross established Hoax Productions to have the freedom to promote and produce top names as well as newly discovered talent.

Recording Bon Jovi, getting voice and guitar just right, upright bass, mixing with Neutron, and recording guitar amps.

My guest today is Steve Dawson, a multiple Juno award-winning musician, with over 80 projects into his career producing award-winning recordings for such artists as Kelly Joe Phelps, Jim Byrnes, Old Man Luedecke, The Deep Dark Woods, Big Dave McLean, John Hammond, Jenny Whiteley.

Steve works onstage and in the studio with musicians as diverse as Tim O’Brien, Matt Chamberlain, Jay Bellerose, Wayne Horvitz, Jill Barber, Colin James, Colin Linden, Sonny Landreth, and The McCrary Sisters. Steve has 8 solo albums to his credit, and tours as a sideman as well, recently touring regularly with the band Birds of Chicago.

My guest today is David Hewitt, who designed and built the legendary Record Plant mobile recording studio, the “Black Truck” in 1978 and formed Remote Recording Services in 1979 for independent Engineering projects and equipment rental.

David is an 8-time TEC Award Winner and member of the TEC Hall of Fame. His credits run from Aretha to Zappa, Miles to MJQ, George Jones to Shania, Mtv to Met Opera, Die Hard to Disney and some that simply defy categories.

My guest today is Derek Olds, an Instructor at The Los Angeles Film & Recording School in Hollywood. He is heavily involved in the Audio & Tech worlds and has run the Celemony Melodyne booths at NAMM, AES, IMSTA, and the Grammy P&E party from 2014 to 2018, where we met.

He has produced or performed over 1200 live shows worldwide in over 10 countries, and is currently planning his upcoming tour in support of his first solo record release. And over the past decade, Derek has had the pleasure of sharing his talent with many of his idols such as Prince, Oprah Winfrey, Bone Thugs, Common, A Tribe Called Quest, & Justin Bieber to name a few.

My guest today is Chris Harden, A Chicago based producer, engineer, and mixer and guitar player, and partner at IV Lab Studios.

Getting his start as assistant engineer on the Grammy nominated Plain White T’s single “Hey There Delilah,” Chris went on to work with Rachael Yamagata, The Von Bondies, Gary Louris (The Jayhawks), Wayne Baker Brooks, and supergroup Hard Working Americans.  

Chris’ production credits include Miracle Condition, District 97, Like Pioneers, and Chicago Farmer. And he continues to perform locally with The Pod (a Ween cover band) and tour nationally with the Ike Reilly Assassination. And He also tours as a live sound engineer and is a member of the Recording Academy.

My guest today is Russ Long, a multi talented producer, engineer, mixer, teacher, and author who engineered the hits “Kiss Me” and “There She Goes” by Sixpence None The Richer. He also recorded and/or mixed albums by Wilco, Newsboys, Over the Rhine, Relient K, Dolly Parton, Jim Brickman, Amy Grant and Steven Curtis Chapman.

His film credits include the soundtracks to The Sapphires, Girl Interrupted, Here On Earth, How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days, The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything, Hannah Montana: The Movie, and She's All That. And Russ has also done 5.1 DVD mixes and live sound recordings  for Switchfoot, Chris Tomlin, Luke Bryan and Guy Clark.

We join him for the podcast in his private Dangerland mix room. He is also a partner in the acclaimed Brown Owl recording studio where he does most of his tracking.

Nick talked about recording awesome drums, and guitars capturing a performance, and how to comp the best vocals.

My guest today is Nick Worley a musician, engineer, who grew up in Nashville around recording studios. His father Paul was a session guitarist, producer and studio owner. He built a one-car garage in East Nashville into a tiny home studio and began recording bands at night and on the weekends while working at Blackbird by day.

In 2017, Nick and his friend from Blackbird, Leland Elliott, had the opportunity to combine their gear and experience and move into a building within the House of Blues studio complex. There, they created their own vibey recording facility, Weatherman Sound, where they currently record music of a variety of genres.

My guest today is Andrew Scheps, a multi Grammy award winning engineer, producer, and mixer. He has worked with a wide array of great artists from  Stevie Wonder, to Michael Jackson, and then recorded and or mixed top records for The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Adele, Audioslave, Green Day, Beyonce, Zac Brown Band, Jay Z, Weezer, Metallica, and Black Sabbath to name just a few.

Andrew is known for his loud and exciting mixes, and for bringing all that to life while mixing within the DAW or otherwise known as ITB (In The Box). Rob talks about getting great acoustic guitar sounds for Elliot Smith, recording Beck Loser, and much more!

My guest today is Rob Schnapf, a producer making critically-acclaimed records for the past two decades. He first gained recognition by producing (with his then-partner Tom Rothrock) Beck's debut album, "Mellow Gold," including the breakthrough single, "Loser." Rob and Tom produced three albums for Elliot Smith, including "XO" and "Figure 8."

Rob went on to produce albums for Guided by Voices, Saves The Day, The Vines, Powderfinger, The Whigs and Tokyo Police Club. In 2009 he produced Booker T Jones' "Potato Hole," which won a Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental Album. In 2011 he produced "The Road From Memphis" with Booker, which again won the Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental Album.

EveAnna talked about growing Manley Labs from a small business into a major company, explained tubes and why they sound great, and shared encouraging advice for getting perfect results even if you make mistakes along the way.

My guest today is EveAnna Manley, CEO and sole owner of Manley Laboratories, makers of hi end audio gear. Inspired by her stepfather who was a part owner of Ampeg in the early 70s Eveanna moved to California in 1989 to begin working in audio at VTL.

A session guitar player with The Nashville Cats, recording with Tom Dowd at Criteria Studios, the difference between a Nashville vs Muscle Shoals recording session, and much more!

My guest today is Mac Gayden considered a musician’s musician for his intricate playing. He started playing guitar in Nashville as a teenager in the 1960s and quickly become a top session guitar player playing on iconic records such as Bob Dylan’s Blonde On Blonde.

Mac was also known for his unique slide guitar sound through a wah pedal made famous on JJ Cale’s record Crazy Mama. And years later in 2013 He was finally inducted into the Country Music Hall Of Fame as one of the original “Nashville Cats”.

My guest today is Andy Reed, a fantastic power pop songwriter, musician, engineer, and producer from Bay City Michigan. Andy owns Reed Recording an analog meets digital studio where he records his own music as well as other bands. I met at Welcome To 1979 recording summit this fall which is an awesome weekend long clinic of music and recording panels.

As an artist Andy writes and records with The Legal Matters a very cool power pop band that reminded me of the things I love about Elliott Smith. And he has also recorded and toured with The Verve Pipe as a bass player.

My guest today is Alysha Brilla a Twice Juno Award nominated singer-songwriter, producer and community organizer. Alysha is a critically acclaimed Indian-Tanzanian Canadian artist who just released her third self produced album, “HUMAN”. which draws on the influences of her unique background. 

A multi-racial child of the Indian diaspora, Alysha’s art aims to unite people through the Canadian cultural kaleidoscope and bring light to social inequity issues in Canada and abroad. Her music and workshops feature strong themes of cultural diversity, gender equality and inclusivity.

My guest today is Nick Krill, a brilliant song writer, producer, and engineer who lives and works in Philadelphia and New York City professionally as both a musician and producer / mixer.

He has since toured the globe as a member of various bands including The Spinto Band, Teen Men, and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. And on the control room side of the studio glass Nick has worked as a Producer Engineer or Mixer for band such as,  The Dove and the Wolf, The Teeth, Jesse Hale Moore, Nightlands, Eliza Hardy Jones, and he also worked on the Grammy winning album, A Deeper Understanding, by The War on Drugs.

My guest today is William Wittman, a musician, multi–platinum engineer, and producer for artists like Cyndi Lauper, Joan Osborne, the Hooters, and The Outfield. He has held the chief engineer position at several major recording studios which also led to several years as an A&R VP and Staff Producer at two major record labels (Sony/Columbia and BMG/RCA). He was also a member of the alternative rock band Too Much Joy. Today, he plays bass guitar in the band of Cyndi Lauper, both in her studio recordings as well as on her international tours.
